Developing Padlock Pad into an App.
Founded by professional football coach Natalie Henderson, the idea of Padlock Pad emerged during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Having spent more than 20 years working across boys' and girls' football, Natalie saw first-hand the impact that the sudden loss of training, competition and routine had on young players.
Looking for ways to help, she began researching the benefits of journaling and reflection. This led to the creation of a football-focused journal that combined personal development, goal setting and mental wellbeing with player development.
What started as a passion project quickly gained traction, but Natalie always believed the concept had the potential to become something much bigger. Her vision was to transform Padlock Pad into a digital platform that could support even more players, coaches and parents.
Natalie had a clear vision for what the Padlock Pad app could become, but little experience of software development, procurement processes or working with technology suppliers. Without the knowledge, confidence or network to progress it, the concept remained largely on paper until a chance meeting led her to Digital Pathfinders who were able to help her navigate an unfamiliar digital landscape and turn a long-held idea into a viable product.
Through Digital Pathfinders, Natalie received tailored support to help define, develop and progress her app. Working closely with Digital Adoption Specialist, Nathan, the process began by exploring Padlock Pad's vision and identifying the core features that would deliver the greatest value to users.
Together, they translated a broad collection of ideas into a clear product specification, creating a roadmap for development and helping Natalie focus on the features that would form the foundation of the app.
Digital Pathfinders also provided specialist support through the procurement process, developing a tender document, sourcing potential app development partners, assessing proposals and creating a structured evaluation process.
Natalie has now successfully selected an app development partner and has now begun building the platform. Support from Digital Pathfinders provided the momentum and the confidence needed to move the project forward.
Padlock Pad is now entering the next phase of its journey. The app will initially be tested with a small group of coaches and players, allowing feedback to shape future development and ensure the platform meets the needs of its users. Once launched, the platform will be available to players, parents and coaches, with ambitions to work directly with clubs, academies and governing bodies across the football ecosystem.
“This was an idea that had been sitting in my head for years because I simply didn't know how to make it happen. Nathan helped me take everything I was trying to achieve and turn it into something practical and achievable. He guided me through every stage of the process, from shaping the concept and creating the tender through to helping me select the right development partner. The technology side isn't my world, but he made everything understandable and gave me the confidence to move forward. Without that support, I genuinely think Padlock Pad would still just be an idea. Instead, it's now being built.”
