Northern Pulse is a community interest company dedicated to delivering inclusive, community-focused music, DJ, and creative arts programmes across Gateshead and the wider North East. The organisation specialises in accessible DJ workshops, music production sessions, creative mentoring, and youth empowerment to support mental wellbeing, reduce isolation, build skills and create positive pathways for the future.

As the organisation continued to develop, the team recognised the need for a stronger digital presence that could better communicate their work, showcase their community projects and make it easier for participants, partners and funders to connect with them.

The Challenge

Northern Pulse’s existing Squarespace website provided a basic online presence, but the organisation wanted something more modern and accessible that could clearly communicate their mission and showcase their projects, while providing straightforward ways for stakeholders to get in touch.

They also wanted to establish custom email addresses for the organisation and develop the digital skills and infrastructure needed to support their wider ambitions.

With limited experience of the technical side of web development, Northern Pulse recognised that professional guidance would help them make the most of the opportunities available and got in touch with Digital Pathfinders.

The Support

Through Digital Pathfinders and Senior Digital Adoption Specialist, Nathan Rowland, the Northern Pulse team received tailored, hands-on support to take them the web design and development process. The support focused on understanding what Northern Pulse needed from its digital presence before translating those requirements into a functional and professional website.

Nathan guided the team through the process of building and launching the website, whilst also helping them understand the technology behind the platform and giving them greater confidence in managing their digital projects.

The support didn't stop with the main website. Nathan also introduced the team to Vercel and Cursor, giving them the knowledge and tools to develop two additional projects: newcastlegigguide.com and barcelonagigguide.com.

The Impact

For the Northern Pulse team, having someone who could explain complex digital and web concepts in clear, practical terms was particularly valuable. With the launch of the new Northern Pulse website, the organisation has a stronger and more professional digital foundation and has seen a direct increase in enquiries from prospective participants, local youth organisations and community partners.

The support has also helped the organisation develop its wider digital capabilities, providing the foundations for additional online projects and giving the team greater confidence in exploring new technology, experimenting with new ideas and finding innovative ways to connect people with music and creative opportunities.

“The support from Nathan and Digital Pathfinders was fantastic. He was extremely helpful, approachable, and patient throughout the entire process. The support has completely transformed the way we approach our digital presence. Nathan took the time to understand what we were trying to achieve, explained everything in a way that made sense to us, and gave us the confidence to go beyond simply building a website. We now have a professional platform that reflects the work we do, we’re reaching more people, and we have the knowledge and foundations to keep developing our digital projects as the organisation grows.”
